Building & Computer Laboratory

Geschafft!

Rarieda Training & Resource Center

The Rarieda Training & Resource Center is a place for underprivileged youth to participate in training programs that build technical and life-skills, improve livelihoods and promote environmental conservation. The Center trains youth in computers, tailoring & dressmaking, carpentry & joinery, hairdressing & barberry, and sustainable agriculture. It is an eco-friendly place where youth also learn ways of improving traditional farming techniques, as well as experience new technologies and environmental conservation including a green house, drip irrigation, Ecosan/Urine Diverting Toilets, composting, tree nursery, beekeeping, value-addition, water harvesting, fish farming and solar power.

Building & Computer Laboratory

18000€ still need: 12000€

In response to the number of youth having completed basic computer training and nearing completion of secondary school, we are looking into expanding accessibility for youth to pursue higher education through distance learning online. A new computer lab with reliable internet access will open opportunities for bright, economically disadvantaged Kenyan youth to afford higher education.

Five 10,000L water storage tanks are needed to capture water for the clean drinking water, the school kitchen, gardens and basic school needs. The cost of each tank, along with tank base, piping and gutters is 1,460€.

Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust

Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust works with on a holistic range of programs to improve the lives of children in Kenya. We work with the guardians of orphaned and vulnerable children and community members in 35 villages to raise their standard of living through community and school-based health programs, advocacy & child rights initiatives, educational support including sponsorship of children to secondary school and vocational training, and economic empowerment projects to lift families out of poverty.

Extra-Curricular Programs

10000€ needed
Donate

These programs provide underprivileged children and youth with a variety of enriching activities in performing arts, sports, health, debate and agricultural studies. In areas where prospects and resources are limited, afterschool programs are often the only source of supplemental enrichment. Afterschool programs offer an effective and affordable way of overcoming obstacles confronting rural communities and helping children realize their full potential. Investing in afterschool programs helps children of rural communities break out of the cycle of poverty and creates opportunities for at-risk youth. Help support our 2014 program of activities for thirteen primary, three secondary, and one technical school.

Child-Led Associations

7500€ needed
Donate

Rafiki supports orphaned children leaders through a child-lead association that we established called Vijana Mikono Pamoja (translated: young people holding hands together). It is important to know that orphaned children and youth increasingly assume roles that were once traditionally in adult domain. In order to develop their potential as leaders, innovators and masters of survival, they need new guidelines and training to be able to make fully informed choices and decisions; and to develop the integrity and respect to stand firm in their choices. If they lack these guidelines and training, they are left in a hailstorm of macro forces that often throw them back into poverty. Support our leadership program for orphaned children and youth by contributing to our program activities.

HEALTH

A large proportion of rural communities in Kenya continue to carry one of the highest preventable burdens of ill health in the world. Much of this burden can be avoided with existing knowledge and resources. RWMT works with these rural communities and the Ministry of Health to empower families to realise their responsibilities to achieve their own good health, as well as their rights for accessible and quality care for their children and themselves.

Toilet and Hand-Washing Facilities

10 x 3200€ still need: 32000€
Donate

A safe environment in schools influences children’s health and wellbeing. Water and sanitation facilities are increasingly recognized as fundamental for promoting appropriate hygiene behaviour and children’s wellbeing. However, many schools experience unsanitary conditions that vary from inappropriate and inadequate sanitary facilities to the outright lack of latrines and safe water for drinking and support to hygiene promotion including hand washing. Provision of adequate water and sanitation facilities coupled with proper hygiene in schools are essential for enhancing effective learning; attracting enrolment in schools, particularly girls; and sustaining a reduced burden of disease and worm infestation among pupils. Our 2014 goal is to build 10 sets of 4-door latrines to ensure that 1,600 children have adequate toilet and hand-washing facilities.

Sponsorship Program

The beneficiaries of our Teen Sponsorship Program have participated and grown in Rafiki’s programs since an early age. Despite very difficult socioeconomic conditions, they have successfully graduated from primary school and need support to continue their education to become healthy young adults. Sponsorship bears the expenses for school fees, life-skills and work-readiness training, reproductive health and HIV prevention education, and medical evaluations. Each sponsor supports a teen directly and will be informed about the progress at least twice a year. We would like our sponsors to continue support until their foster child has completed 3 years of technical or 4 years of secondary education, or, ideally, up to a university degree. Sponsorship fee is €30/month or €360/year for secondary and €200/month or €2400/ year for university.
